After years of research and reading into how to write the perfect personal statement I concluded that no single ‘expert’ is right. Nevertheless, there are rules of thumb. This article will hopefully inspire your writing. If you have already written your personal statement we have a section on dealing with the first year of university. The contents of this article include:

1. Preparing to tell your story
2. Writing Inspiration
5. Bonus Personal Statement

Be yourself

The most important advice in this whole process will be new to you.

If in your personal statement you try to be someone you are not then you it will not ring true. Admission officers are always looking for a certain type of person – and students that will fit in socially.

Getting the right balance

Most people err on the side of modesty rather than arrogance. A personal statement dripping with humility can grate with the admission officer.

Sharing secrets

How much you choose to reveal about yourself is up to you. Many experienced writers fall into the trap of keeping the reader at arms length. Sharing a secret even a small one such as a childhood experience will compel the Admission Officer.

Including what you don’t know

Sometimes personal statements that include what you do not know can be a significant tool. Describing the story of dad hiding granny’s teeth (if you want to study dentistry!) is amusing, but also shows that he had a sense of humour. Rather than to just say ‘my dad had a great sense of humour.’
