My interest in medicine has been long standing. Studying a degree in a subject that holds great passion to my heart will give me a sound footing for my future ambition to carry out voluntary work in Africa.

My performance in both my academic and work pursuits has always been excellent.  Having just reached thirty-six, I believe I am ready to take on the challenge. Following my application last year and not getting a place proved a disappointing time in my life. To me, failure is never an option and although I had this setback was not going to give up my lifelong dream. More importantly, the experience showed me that I needed to work harder if I wanted to fulfil my dream of becoming a doctor.

I am currently studying A2 Biology, Chemistry and Law.  I also studied Physics at AS level.  This combination of subjects has already provided a good basis to successfully achieve at University.  During the summer holidays, I had the opportunity to work closely with a number of doctors in a variety of contexts. This provided me with the foundation and certainty in that this profession is defiantly something that I should pursue. I have come now to a point in my life that I am able to assess my strengths and discover what truly drives me.

In 2001 I was involved in a car accident and thankfully I was not severely hurt however, I was taken to accident and emergency with mild whiplash. I can remember the nurses and doctors helping me get over the shock of the situation, to me, it was the care and attention that they placed on helping me overcome the shock rather than just the medical attention that I was given. To that point, I realise that a doctor needs to be able to show a good motivational persona as well as aim to provide respite care for the benefit of the individuals and families.

This year has already proved invaluable in terms of gaining the knowledge and I have fortunate to be given some hands on skills that I need to excel. It has given me the chance to shadow a doctor in Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry.

Through this voluntary experience, I learned that the patient contact had the biggest impact on my enthusiasm.  I have always felt personal satisfaction from making a positive difference in life.  The work experience at Walsgrave has given me the opportunity to interact with many people ranging from drug addicts to poorly babies; this experience has only increased my curiosity and attraction for this field. Reliance, veracity, and mutual respect are three important characteristics that a doctor must contain.

It is these characteristics which I hold and the appreciation for the work that doctors do puts me in good stead to fulfil my long-term ambition.
